The product:

HauteShop Game Parlor shopping App was created to help users purchase their favorite games with ease and at the comfort of their homes without having to make a trip to the Game Parlor and also to avoid frustrations that come with late knowledge of products not in stock.

The Problem:

Busy Users and Gamers lack the time and convenience of going to the Game Parlor to purchase Games. The existing online options lack a tailored experience for game parlour enthusiasts, and there is an opportunity to create a dedicated shopping app specifically catering to this niche audience.

Understanding
the user

  • User research
  • Personas
  • Problem statements
  • User journey maps

User research: summary

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was students who don’t have time to visit the Game Parlor.

This user group confirmed initial assumptions about Gameparlor customers, but research also revealed that time was not the only factor limiting users from buying at the Game Parlor.

Other user problems included obligations, interests, or challenges that make it difficult to get the games from the Game Parlor in-person.

Time

Youths are too caught up with playing games to visit the Game parlor

Accessibility

There’s no platform available for ordering games with ease and at the comfort of the youth

Availability

There’s no way to know if a particular game is out of stock or not.

Starting
the design

  • Paper wireframes
  • Digital wireframes
  • Low-fidelity prototype
  • Usability studies

Paper wireframes

Taking little time, I made a quick sketch of how my lo-fi wireframes would look like, each screen sketched is able to address user pain points. I prioritized a quick and easy ordering process to help users save time.

Digital wireframes

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from user research.

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from user research.

Low-fidelity prototype

Using the few sets of digital wireframes, I created alow-fidelity prototype. The primary user flow I connected was selecting and ordering a game, so the prototype could be used in a usability study.

Usability study: findings

Round 1 findings

  • Users  want to order games quickly
  • Users want a delivery option

Round 2 findings

  • Some navigations were confusing
  • Users want a favorite button or to be able to save their favorite game
  • More options for the checkout process.

Mockups

Early designs had a lot of iterations, after the usability studies, I added a lot of screens including a separate screen for categories so that users can easily search and explore the game options available

Before usability study

After usability study

The second usability study revealed the need for a favorite button and page. Users can also add their favorite games to their user profile. I also added more options for the checkout process. I also iterated the navigation flow and made it easily accessible.

After usability study 2

Key Mockups

High-fidelity prototype

The final high-fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows for ordering a game and checkout. It also met user needs for more delivery options as well as more screen customization.

Accessibility considerations

Provided a strong color contrast following the WCAG standards for color contrast.

I used clear and concise labels for buttons, form fields, and other interactive elements.

I organized the app’s layout in a logical and consistent manner, to help users understand and navigate through the content easily.

Going forward

  • Next steps

Takeaways

Impact:

  • The HauteShop app will contribute to the growth and success of surrounding game parlour businesses. It can attract a larger customer base and increase sales for game parlour retailers.
  • HauteShop provides a convenient and streamlined shopping experience for game parlour enthusiasts. It allows users to browse and purchase a wide range of games and accessories from the comfort of their own devices.

What I learned:

  • Designing an app like HauteShop involved a lot of Learning and iteration from user feedback, identifying pain points, and continuously improving the app's design and functionality which helped to ensure a high-quality user experience.
  • I learned to differentiate my own assumptions from what the user wants as indicated from the user surveys and interviews.

Next step

Continuous Improvement: Actively gathering user feedback and analyzing user behavior to identify areas of improvement. Regular updates and feature enhancements to keep the app relevant, and address user needs, and also adapt to evolving technologies and user expectations.

Other good stuff.
